On June 28, 2025 the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG) comes into force!

To ensure that accessibility looks and works well, there is a new variable font optimized for readability called “Barrierefrei Sans”: 901 glyphs + 95 languages + 9 weights (Thin, ExtraLight, Light, Regular, Medium, SemiBold, Bold, Heavy, Ultra) for Mac & Windows.

The font fulfills criteria such as:
✅ large x-height (supports reading at small font sizes)
✅ distinguishability of letterforms (dyslexia)
✅ large aperture/open spaces (optimizes legibility) …

The variable typeface Barrierefrei Sans (accessibility) is designed from 2022–2024 (font-release 2025) for the font foundry Typo Graphic Design by the type designer Manuel Viergutz for optimized legibility and readability.

9 font-styles (Thin, Extra Light, Light, Regular, Medium, SemiBold, Bold, Heavy, Ultra) with 901 glyphs (Adobe Latin 3) for 95 languages (from Afrikaans to Zulu) inclusive 100+ icons like decorative extras, arrows, catch words, dingbats, emojis, symbols, geometric shapes (type the word #LOVE for ❤ as OpenType-Feature dlig) and stylistic alternates (4 stylistic sets).

Characteristics of the font “Barrierefrei Sans” are optimized legibility in the form of a large x-Height (easier to read at small sizes), an large apertures (lowercase letter “a” or “e”), a large counter (direct effect on a optimise legibility) and the distinctiveness of individual letter shapes facilitates quick recognition (l ≠ I or O ≠ 0).

For use in logos, packaging for drinks & food, magazines, posters, advertisement plus as webfont for decorative headlines. The font works best for text size & display size.
